Introduce
(1928-2005)
Arman Pierre Fernandez was born in Nice, France, in 1928. In 1960, he participated in the 1st exhibition of Nouveau Réalisme (New Realism), and was one of the founders of the movement. For several times, he was appointed to Officier de la Légion d’Honneur, Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres, Officier de l’Ordre National du Mérite. In 2005, Arman passed away in New York at the age of 76, during which French President Jacques Chirac gave out his condolences, praising Arman as “an untiring creator of new forms from the rejects of modernity.”
What signatures Arman’s art is his creating process of segmenting objects and accumulating technique. The segmented objects could range from instruments, statues of Greek mythology, furniture, to vehicles, tools, components of timepiece, everyday use, and so on. His creation, through segment and different scales of accumulation, manifests the idea of “quantity.” Not only did he bestow objects a new form of appearance and meaning, but he provoked objects’ potential function. Most important of all, Arman’s artworks accumulate human’s feeling to these objects.
